Why tile is different
On shingle, a mount comes off and a new one flashes into the next course. On tile, every single attachment point sits under a tile that has to be lifted, set aside and put back — or replaced, because concrete and clay both break. Multiply that by the number of mounts under a 30-panel array and you understand why tile detach and reset is quoted higher and scheduled longer. The labor is careful rather than heavy, and it does not compress well.

How the reinstall should be flashed
There are two defensible methods on tile. Tile hooks reach through to the deck and are flashed under the tile course, letting the original tile sit back down over the attachment. Replacement flashing pans swap a tile for a metal pan with an integrated boot. Both keep the waterproofing layer intact. What is not acceptable is a mount screwed through the face of a tile and sealed with caulk — that is a leak with a countdown timer on it, and it is unfortunately common on older Florida installs.

Timeline on a tile roof
The array typically comes down over one to two days depending on size and pitch. If the roof is being replaced, tile roofs take longer to tear off and dry in than shingle, and the inspection calendar is the same either way. Realistically, plan for the system to be offline about a week to two weeks on a tile project, and longer if tile has to be sourced. We give you the dates in writing before we start, and we tell you when the number is going to move.
Repairs versus full replacement
Not every tile job is a full reroof. If the tile field is sound and the underlayment has life left, an isolated repair around a leak may not require a full detach — only the panels over the affected plane come down. Where the underlayment is at end of life, though, spot repairs are money spent twice, because the whole plane will need to come off within a few years anyway. An inspection answers this honestly; a phone quote cannot.

Can solar panels be removed from a tile roof without breaking tiles?
Some breakage is normal no matter how careful the crew is — concrete and clay are brittle and older tile is more so. A good crew minimizes it, stages walk boards to spread load, and includes replacement tile in the scope rather than surprising you with it later.
How much more does tile cost than shingle for detach and reset?
Meaningfully more, because every mount point involves hand-handling tile and a share of it needs replacing. The exact difference depends on array size, tile profile and how much matching tile is available. We inspect before quoting rather than applying a generic multiplier.
What if my tile profile is discontinued?
We source salvage or the closest current match and, where appearance matters, relocate original tile to the visible planes and put the substitute where it does not show. It is worth knowing early, because sourcing is usually what extends the schedule.
How should panels be mounted on tile after the reinstall?
Tile hooks flashed under the course, or replacement flashing pans that swap a tile for a metal pan with an integrated boot. Both keep the waterproofing intact. A mount screwed through the face of a tile and sealed with caulk is not acceptable work.
Do I need a permit for tile solar removal and reinstall?
Yes in nearly every case — a roofing permit for the tile work, plus an electrical or PV permit for the reset in most Florida jurisdictions. We pull and close both.
How long will my system be offline?
Plan for roughly one to two weeks on a tile project. Tear-off and dry-in take longer than shingle, and inspection scheduling adds days that have nothing to do with crew speed.
Can you replace only part of a tile roof under the array?
Sometimes. If the underlayment on the rest of the roof is sound, an isolated plane can be addressed and only the panels above it come down. If the underlayment is at end of life, partial work means paying to detach the array twice.
Will removing the panels damage my roof warranty?
Handled correctly, no — but the flashing details have to match the roofing manufacturer's requirements, and the work should be documented with photographs. Undocumented work by an unlicensed crew is where warranty arguments start.
Do you store the panels during the work?
Yes. Modules are labeled by string, crated and stored on site, or hauled to our shop when the roof will be open for an extended period.
Will the array go back in the same layout?
Usually, because the layout was engineered around your production and the roof planes. If the original design was poor or the roof planes changed, we will show you a better layout before reinstalling rather than silently changing it.
Do you verify production after the reset?
Always. We recommission the system, reconnect monitoring, and compare output against your pre-removal baseline before we call the job finished.
