Battery or generator for Florida outages?
Both keep the lights on. They fail differently, cost differently, and suit different houses. The right answer depends on how long your outages last, whether you already have solar, and how much of the house you actually need running.

Runtime
A generator runs as long as it has fuel, which makes it the stronger answer for multi-day outages after a major storm. A battery runs until its usable capacity is spent, then needs sun or grid power to recharge. Paired with solar, a battery recharges every morning — that is the pairing that changes the math.
Fuel and supply
Natural gas standby units run off the utility line and need nothing from you. Propane and gasoline units need a tank, deliveries, and fuel that is hardest to find in exactly the week you need it. A battery has no fuel logistics at all.
Switchover speed
Batteries transfer in milliseconds, so you often do not notice the outage started. Standby generators need a few seconds to start and transfer, which is fine for lights and fridges and less fine for sensitive electronics without a UPS.
Noise and placement
A running generator is audible from inside and to your neighbors, and code sets clearances from windows and property lines. Batteries are silent and mount on a wall or pad, which matters in tight lots and HOA neighborhoods.
Maintenance
Generators are engines: oil, filters, exercise cycles, and a service visit on a schedule. Batteries have no moving parts and are largely monitored by software. That difference compounds over the life of the equipment.
Day-to-day value
A generator sits idle until the power fails. A battery can shift stored solar into evening use and, with the right design, keep more of your production on site. Only one of the two does anything for you on a normal Tuesday.

Is a battery or a generator better for hurricane season?
It depends on outage length. For restoration measured in days, a fueled standby generator carries more load for longer. For outages measured in hours, or where you have solar recharging the battery each morning, storage covers the same event silently and with no fuel run. Some homes end up with both, with the battery carrying critical circuits and the generator carrying the rest.
Can a battery run my air conditioning?
Sometimes, and it depends on the unit and the capacity you install. Air conditioning is the single largest load in most Florida homes, and carrying it meaningfully takes real capacity. We look at your equipment and tell you honestly what a given design will and will not carry.
How long will a home battery last during an outage?
It is set by usable capacity divided by the load you back up. Backing up a refrigerator, lights, internet, and a few outlets stretches far longer than backing up the whole panel. Choosing circuits deliberately is the cheapest way to extend runtime.
Do I need solar to install a battery?
No. A battery can charge from the grid and provide backup on its own. But without solar, it cannot recharge during an extended outage, which is the specific weakness that pairing with an array removes.
What does a standby generator require to install?
A gas or propane supply, a pad, an automatic transfer switch, and clearances that satisfy code and often the HOA. It is an electrical and fuel project, and both scopes belong on the quote.
Can I add a battery to an existing solar system?
Often yes, though the inverter architecture decides how clean the retrofit is. Systems designed without storage in mind sometimes need additional equipment. If backup is even a maybe, it is cheaper to plan for it at design time.
Which one is cheaper?
Up front, a partial-home battery and a mid-size standby generator can land closer together than people expect, but their ownership costs diverge. Generators add fuel and service; batteries add essentially none. Compare over years, not on the install invoice alone.
Do generators need to run regularly?
Yes. Standby units self-exercise on a schedule to keep the engine healthy, and they need periodic oil and filter service. Skipping that maintenance is the most common reason a generator fails on the night it is needed.
Will a battery power my whole house?
Whole-home backup is possible but it is the expensive version of the question. Most Florida homeowners are better served by backing up the circuits that matter — refrigeration, lights, internet, medical equipment, a bedroom AC circuit — and letting the rest go dark.
Does backup power qualify for financing?
Storage and backup can be included in the financing structures we work with, alongside a solar array. We show cash and financed numbers side by side so the monthly figure is not the only thing you see.
Is a portable generator good enough?
It can cover a refrigerator and a few extension cords, and many Florida families get by with one. What it cannot do is start automatically, run safely in rain without a proper setup, or back-feed a panel legally without a transfer switch.
