What solar maintenance actually looks like in Florida.
An array has no moving parts, so most of ownership is watching production and leaving the roof alone. The real maintenance items are the inverter, the roof underneath, and the specifically Florida problems: pollen, salt film, afternoon storms, and wildlife under the modules.
What needs attention, and how often.
Six real maintenance items for a Florida array.
Production monitoring
This is the whole job, most years. Monitoring shows you what the array made and flags a panel or string that has fallen off. Catching a dead optimizer in a week instead of a season is the difference between a warranty claim and lost production.
Cleaning, occasionally
Florida rain does most of the washing. What rain does not clear is heavy spring pollen, construction dust, and coastal salt film, and those are worth rinsing. Never pressure wash modules or walk the array yourself — both cause more damage than the dirt did.
Inverter service life
Inverters are the component most likely to need attention over the system's life, and their warranty term is shorter than the modules'. Knowing your inverter type and warranty length is the single most useful thing you can know about your own system.
The roof underneath
The roof ages on its own schedule regardless of the array. Flashing, penetrations, and the surrounding field should be looked at with the same attention you would give any Florida roof — before a leak, not after.
Storm and post-storm checks
After a named storm, a visual check for lifted modules, damaged conduit, and debris under the array is worth doing. Most systems come through fine; the point is confirming it rather than assuming it.
Wildlife and vegetation
Squirrels, birds, and rats nest in the gap between modules and roof, and chewed wiring is a genuine Florida failure mode. Critter guard is cheap; so is trimming the branch that grew into the array over three summers.
Signs something is wrong.
When to stop watching and call somebody.
- Monitoring shows a panel, string, or the whole system at zero
- Production has dropped noticeably against the same month last year
- The inverter is showing a fault code or has gone dark
- A breaker or the AC disconnect keeps tripping
- Visible damage: lifted modules, loose racking, hanging conduit
- Any staining on the ceiling below the array, which is a roof issue first
What warranties usually cover.
Three separate warranties, and they are not the same document.
- Module manufacturer warranty on defects and long-term output
- Inverter manufacturer warranty on a shorter term than the modules
- Installer workmanship warranty covering the install and roof penetrations
- Roof manufacturer warranty, which is separate and can be affected by penetrations

Do solar panels need cleaning in Florida?
Rarely on a schedule. Florida's rainfall clears most soiling on its own, and the exceptions are heavy pollen season, nearby construction, and salt film in coastal areas. If production has dropped and monitoring points at soiling rather than a hardware fault, a rinse is reasonable.
Can I clean the panels myself?
We do not recommend it. Walking a roof is a fall risk, pressure washing damages module seals and can void a warranty, and cold water on hot glass can crack it. If cleaning is genuinely needed, it should be done from the ground or by someone equipped for the roof.
How often should a system be inspected?
A visual and electrical check every few years is sensible, plus a look after any significant storm. Between those, monitoring is your inspection — it tells you about a problem faster than an annual visit would.
How long do solar panels last?
Modules are long-lived and degrade slowly rather than failing on a date, which is why manufacturer warranties are written around output over decades. The inverter is the shorter-lived component and the one to plan around.
Do inverters need replacing?
Often once over the system's life, depending on the type and how it has run. String inverters and microinverters age differently and carry different warranty terms. Knowing which you have tells you what to expect.
What happens to panels in a hurricane?
Systems are engineered and permitted to the wind loads required for your county, and properly installed arrays generally come through named storms intact. The failure mode we see is not the panels — it is the roof they were fastened to.
Does maintenance cost money if the system is under warranty?
Warranty covers defective equipment; it does not always cover the labor to diagnose or the trip to your roof. Read the workmanship warranty terms on your original contract, because that is where the labor question lives.
Will bird nesting damage my system?
It can. Nests under modules trap heat and debris, and rodents chew wiring. Critter guard around the array perimeter is an inexpensive prevention and much cheaper than the repair.
Should I get the roof inspected too?
Yes, and treat it as a separate question from the array. The roof has its own life, and finding a problem while the array can be worked around is far cheaper than finding it after a leak.
Can you service a system another company installed?
Yes. We service arrays we did not install, including diagnosing production drops, inverter faults, and detach-and-reset work for roofing. Origin is a licensed Florida electrical contractor, EC13012465.
What if my original installer is out of business?
That is common enough in Florida solar that we handle it regularly. Manufacturer warranties on modules and inverters usually survive the installer; the workmanship coverage generally does not. We can pick up service either way.
Does maintenance differ for coastal homes?
Somewhat. Salt air accelerates corrosion on hardware and electrical enclosures, and salt film on glass is more persistent than inland dust. Coastal installs should use salt-rated hardware from day one, and get looked at a bit more attentively.
