A generator quote should cover the full installation.

Define selected circuits or a whole-home goal

List the equipment you expect to use during an outage and discuss what needs to operate at once. Air conditioning, well pumps and other motors may need a separate startup review. A whole-home goal still needs an equipment and load assessment; the phrase alone does not tell you how simultaneous loads will be managed.

Include the supporting work

The generator is one part of the scope. Ask about transfer equipment, electrical work, placement, access, required fuel work and permits. Identify who handles each trade and what is excluded from the estimate. Share photos taken safely from outside existing enclosures and describe where equipment could be located without deciding placement before the site review.

Plan for testing and maintenance
