How long does a solar permit take in Florida?
The install itself is usually the shortest part. Most of the calendar is design, permitting, inspection, and waiting on the utility — and each of those has a different owner. Here is the sequence, what drives delay at each stage, and what you are responsible for.
The stages, in order.
Every Florida solar project moves through these six phases.
Site assessment and design
We verify roof condition, measure the array area, check the electrical service, and build the layout against twelve months of your usage. Getting this stage right is what keeps the later ones from stalling.
Engineering and document package
Structural and electrical drawings are prepared and stamped where the jurisdiction requires it. Incomplete packages are the single most common reason a permit comes back for revision, which restarts a review queue.
HOA submittal, where applicable
If your neighborhood requires architectural review, that packet runs on the HOA's meeting schedule rather than the county's. Florida law limits how far an association can restrict solar, but the submittal step still consumes calendar time.
County or city permit review
The building department reviews the structural and electrical scope. Review times vary widely by jurisdiction and season, and a busy post-storm period slows every department at once.
Installation
The physical work is typically the fastest phase for a residential array. Mounting, wiring, and inverter setup happen on scheduled crew days once the permit is in hand.
Inspection and permission to operate
The local inspector signs off, then the utility completes interconnection and issues permission to operate. The system stays off until that final approval arrives.

How long does the whole solar process take in Florida?
From signed agreement to permission to operate, most residential projects run on the order of weeks to a few months, dominated by permit review and utility interconnection rather than construction. Your county and utility set most of that, which is why we give a range for your specific address rather than a marketing number.
How long does the actual installation take?
For a typical residential array, the physical install is short — usually a matter of days on site, sometimes a single crew day for a simple roof. Complex tile roofs, service upgrades, and battery additions extend it.
Why does permitting take so long?
Building departments review structural and electrical scope on a queue, and that queue lengthens with volume and after storms. A complete, correctly stamped package moves through it once; an incomplete one goes to the back of the line after revisions.
Can I speed up the permit?
Not by pushing the department, but by removing the things that cause a second review: accurate drawings, a resolved roof condition, and an electrical scope that reflects the actual panel. That is the part we control and take seriously.
Do I need HOA approval for solar in Florida?
Florida law limits how much an association can restrict solar installations, but many neighborhoods still require an architectural submittal. We file that packet, and we tell you early if your association's meeting calendar is likely to be the long pole.
When can I turn the system on?
Only after the local inspection passes and the utility issues permission to operate. Energizing before PTO creates safety and tariff problems, so the array stays off until the approval is in hand.
What happens if my roof needs work mid-project?
We look for that before design, precisely so it does not surface mid-project. If a roof is near end of life, we price roofing and solar together so the sequence stays one project with one permit cycle.
Does adding a battery change the timeline?
Somewhat. Storage adds equipment to the electrical package and sometimes to the inspection scope. Planning storage at design time costs far less calendar than adding it as a second project later.
Do timelines differ by county?
Yes, meaningfully. Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Polk, and the surrounding jurisdictions run their own review queues and inspection schedules. We work in these departments continually, so we can tell you what current review looks like where you live.
Does the utility matter for timing?
It does. Interconnection is the utility's process, and TECO, Duke, and the municipal and co-op providers each run their own queue and meter-exchange scheduling. That step sits at the end and is the one nobody can shortcut.
Do you pull the permits, or do I?
We do. Origin is a licensed Florida electrical contractor, EC13012465, and we pull the permit, respond to review comments, and schedule the inspections. Homeowner-pulled permits shift liability to you and are almost never a good idea.
What can I do while I wait?
Send us a recent bill if you have not, confirm any HOA requirements, and clear access to the electrical panel and attic. Those three things remove most of the avoidable friction from the schedule.
