What does EV charger installation involve?

A Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit run from your panel to where the car parks. The work is a load calculation, a breaker, a conductor run sized to the charger, the receptacle or hardwired connection, a permit, and an inspection. The charger itself is the simple part — the panel and the run are where the real questions are.

Does my electrical panel have enough capacity for an EV charger?

That is the first thing we check, and it is the answer that changes the job. A load calculation determines whether your existing service can carry a 40 or 48 amp continuous load on top of the air conditioning, water heater and range. Many older Tampa homes on 100 or 150 amp service need either a service upgrade or a load management device.

What if my panel is full or too small?

There are three paths and we will tell you honestly which fits: a service and panel upgrade, a load management device that pauses charging when the house draws heavily, or a lower-amperage charger that still fully recharges overnight. The third option is often the right one and it is the one nobody offers, because it is the cheapest.

Do I need a permit for an EV charger in Hillsborough County?

Yes. A new 240-volt branch circuit is permitted electrical work and requires inspection. We pull the permit and meet the inspector. Unpermitted charger installs show up during home sales and insurance reviews, and fixing them later costs more than doing it right.

How long does the installation take?

Most straightforward installs are done in a day. What extends it is distance from the panel, running conduit through finished walls or across an attic, an outdoor run, or a panel that needs work first.

Should I hardwire the charger or use a NEMA 14-50 outlet?

Hardwiring supports higher continuous amperage and is generally the more robust connection. A 14-50 receptacle lets you unplug and take the unit with you. For most homes either is fine — the honest deciding factor is usually whether you want portability, plus GFCI requirements that apply to receptacle installs.

Can I charge my EV from solar?

Yes, and this is where it gets genuinely interesting. Charging during daylight uses solar production directly instead of exporting it. If we are designing solar for you and an EV is in the picture, that changes system sizing — we would rather account for it up front than have you add a car later and find the array undersized.

Do you install commercial EV charging?

Yes. Multi-unit properties, workplaces and small fleets are a different scope — service capacity, multiple ports, load sharing and conduit infrastructure — and we handle that as a commercial electrical project.
