The generator
Air-cooled or liquid-cooled depending on the load and how much runtime you need. Placement has to satisfy clearance and setback rules, which sometimes constrains the choice more than the specs do.
Automatic transfer switch
The safety-critical piece. It isolates your home from the grid before the generator energizes anything — protecting utility linemen and your equipment. Whole-house or managed-load, decided at design.
Fuel supply
Natural gas line or a propane tank sized for the runtime you actually want. Undersized gas supply is a common cause of generators that start fine and then stumble under load.
Pad and clearances
A level pad, elevated appropriately, with the manufacturer's clearances from windows, doors, vents and the lot line — plus Florida wind-load anchoring.

What is a whole house generator?
A permanently installed standby generator wired to your electrical system through an automatic transfer switch. When utility power drops, the transfer switch isolates your house from the grid and the generator starts on its own — typically within about half a minute — with no cords and nobody standing outside in a storm.
What size generator does a Tampa home need?
It depends on whether you want the whole house or just the circuits that matter. Air conditioning is what drives the number in Florida — a compressor's starting draw is the single largest load most homes have. We size from your actual equipment, not square footage, and a managed-load approach often lets a smaller unit cover more than people expect.
Does a standby generator need a permit?
Yes — electrical, and usually mechanical and gas as well, plus a site plan showing clearances from windows, doors and the property line. Inspection is required before it can be commissioned. We handle the permit package.
Natural gas or propane?
If natural gas is available at the street, it is generally simpler — unlimited runtime with no tank to refill or refuel. Propane means a tank on the property, which has to be sized for the runtime you want and placed to meet setback rules. Many Tampa-area homes have no gas service, which makes propane the default.
Generator or battery backup — which is better?
They solve different problems, and we install both, so we have no reason to push you either way. A generator runs indefinitely as long as it has fuel, which is what matters in a multi-day hurricane outage. A battery is silent, needs no fuel, recharges from solar, and handles the short outages that happen far more often. Homes that want both outcomes sometimes get both.
How long does installation take?
The on-site work is typically two to three days: pad, generator set, transfer switch, gas line and electrical connection. The full timeline is longer because of permitting, inspection and gas utility scheduling — and lead times stretch considerably right after a major storm.
How much maintenance does a standby generator need?
Real maintenance, not none. They self-exercise weekly and need periodic oil, filter and battery service. The starting battery is the most common failure point, and it is almost always what is wrong when a generator does not start during an outage. A unit that has gone years without service is not a backup plan.

Yes. Maintenance, repair and transfer switch work on existing units is a regular part of what we do.
