Every solar array, reroof, battery and standby generator in Florida is permitted work, and the requirements change at each county line and each utility boundary. This is the reference we use internally, published openly so homeowners, realtors and other contractors can use it too.

Incorporated cities inside these counties often run their own building departments — the city reviews the permit, and the county utility territory still governs interconnection. Confirm the reviewing jurisdiction by address before you submit.
Common questions
- Do I need a permit to install solar panels in Florida?
- Yes. Solar is a permitted electrical and structural alteration everywhere in Florida. The application includes an engineered mounting plan showing the array meets Florida Building Code wind loads for your county and roof height, plus an electrical plan for the inverter, disconnect and point of interconnection.
- Who pulls the permit — me or the contractor?
- A licensed contractor should pull it. An owner-builder permit puts the code compliance, inspection and liability on you, and most utilities will not process an interconnection until a permit closes out under a licensed contractor.
- How long does a Florida solar permit take?
- It varies by jurisdiction and by season. Timelines lengthen after storm events when building departments are handling roof repair volume. Practically, the sequence is the same everywhere: submit plans, respond to any plan-review comments, install, pass inspection, then submit for utility permission to operate.
- What is interconnection and permission to operate?
- Interconnection is the utility's approval to connect your system to the grid; permission to operate (PTO) is the notice that you may switch it on. It is a separate process from the county permit, runs on the utility's timeline, and typically requires the closed permit and inspection record before it is granted.
- Do I need a separate permit for a roof and for solar?
- Usually yes — roofing and solar are different permit types, often reviewed by different disciplines. When we package a roof and an array together we sequence both applications so the roof closes out before the array goes on.
- Does an HOA have to allow solar in Florida?
- Florida Statute 163.04 limits how much an association can restrict solar. An HOA may not effectively prohibit a solar collector, though it can make reasonable requests about placement that do not impair performance. Documentation for the association is part of what we prepare.
- What about generators and EV chargers?
- Standby generators require an electrical permit and, for natural gas or LP, a gas permit and inspection, plus setback compliance. EV chargers require an electrical permit and a load calculation showing your panel supports the added circuit.
- Do coastal addresses have extra requirements?
- Yes. High-velocity and wind-borne debris regions carry stricter attachment and product-approval requirements, and elevation or flood zone can change how equipment must be mounted. That review happens at design, not at inspection.
