The question behind 'will my panels survive a hurricane' is really about attachment and the roof underneath. Florida permits arrays to engineered wind loads for a reason, and the systems that fail in storms almost always failed at the roof or the fastener, not at the glass.

Wind-load engineering for your county

Florida jurisdictions set design wind speeds, and the permit package has to show the array meets them. That calculation drives fastener spacing, rail spans, and the attachment count — it is not a formality.

Attachment method and fastener spacing

Modules are only as secure as what holds the racking to the structure. Attachments must land in structural members, with correct spacing and proper flashing. Under-attaching to save labor is the defect that shows up in a storm.

Roof condition and deck integrity

The array transfers load to the roof deck. A sound deck and sound sheathing carry it; an aging roof does not become stronger because there are panels on it. This is why roof condition is a solar question, not just a roofing one.

Flashing and water sealing

Every penetration is a potential leak in wind-driven rain. Proper flashing at each attachment is what keeps a storm from turning into a ceiling repair, and it is inspected work.

Salt-rated hardware near the coast

Coastal Florida corrodes hardware. Stainless and coated components rated for salt exposure keep the attachment strong years later, which is when the storm that matters arrives.

  • Confirm the roof's condition and remaining life, independent of the array
  • Have visible racking, clamps, and conduit checked for corrosion or looseness
  • Trim branches that have grown over or into the array
  • Know where your AC disconnect and rapid shutdown are located
  • Save your monitoring login so you can compare production after the storm
  • Photograph the array so you have a documented pre-storm condition

  • Do not go on the roof, and do not touch damaged wiring or modules
  • Compare production in your monitoring against pre-storm days
  • Look from the ground for lifted modules, hanging conduit, or debris
  • Check ceilings below the array for staining that indicates a roof breach
  • Photograph any visible damage before anything is moved
  • Call a licensed contractor for assessment rather than a storm-chasing crew

Can solar panels survive a hurricane in Florida?

Properly engineered and permitted arrays are designed to the wind loads required for the county they are installed in, and well-installed systems routinely come through named storms intact. The failures we are called to inspect are usually attachment or roof failures, not the modules themselves.

Do solar panels make my roof more likely to fail?

Not when the install is engineered and the roof was sound to begin with. What does create risk is putting an array on a roof near end of life, or attaching it without landing fasteners in structural members with proper flashing.

What wind speed are Florida solar systems rated for?

Design wind speed is set by your jurisdiction's building code and your specific location, and the engineering package submitted with the permit has to demonstrate compliance. It is not a single statewide number, which is why the drawings are site-specific.

Should I remove panels before a hurricane?

No. Removing an array takes days and licensed work, and a properly attached system is safer in place than a rushed partial removal. There is no homeowner action that makes a permitted array meaningfully safer before a storm.

Does insurance cover solar panel damage?

Coverage varies by policy, and the array is typically treated as part of the dwelling or as scheduled property. It is worth confirming with your carrier when the system goes in, not after a claim.

Will my system work during a hurricane outage?

Not on its own. Grid-tied arrays shut down when the grid goes down, for line-worker safety. Producing power during an outage requires storage or a backup-capable inverter designed for it.

What if my roof is damaged but the panels are fine?

Then the array is detached, the roof is repaired or replaced, and the system is reset. Origin does roofing and solar in-house, so that sequence stays with one contractor and one warranty conversation.

How do I know if my existing array was installed correctly?

An inspection can verify attachment spacing, flashing, and whether the install matches the permitted drawings. If you inherited a system with a house, or the original installer is gone, that check is worth doing before storm season.

Is tile roof solar more vulnerable in storms?

Tile requires a different attachment approach and more careful flashing, and it is less forgiving of shortcuts. Done correctly it performs well; done cheaply it is the roof type where we see the most water intrusion after wind-driven rain.

Do coastal installs need different hardware?

Yes. Salt exposure degrades ordinary hardware, so coastal arrays should use salt-rated components from the start. Corroded attachments are weak attachments, and the weakness only becomes visible in a storm.

Who repairs storm damage to a solar system?

A licensed contractor should. Origin holds Florida electrical license EC13012465 and handles storm assessment, detach and reset, and reinstall — including on systems we did not originally install.

Can I add storage so I have power during outages?

Yes. A battery, or a battery plus generator combination, is how you keep circuits running while the grid is down. Sizing backup to the circuits that matter is usually more practical than whole-home coverage.
