Do you need a panel upgrade for solar?
Solar has to land somewhere legal in your electrical service. On many Florida homes it does, with room to spare. On older services, full panels, and obsolete equipment, it does not — and that line item belongs on the bid before you sign, not in a change order after the crew arrives.
What triggers an upgrade.
Six conditions that turn a panel upgrade into part of the solar scope.
Service size too small for the interconnection
The array ties into the service, and code limits how much backfeed a given busbar and main breaker can accept. An older service can be perfectly safe for the house and still be unable to legally accept the size of array your usage calls for.
No physical space in the panel
Even when the capacity math works, there has to be a place to land the breaker. Panels that are full, or full of tandem breakers, sometimes need to be reworked or replaced before anything new is added.
Obsolete or recalled equipment
Certain older panel brands and breaker types are no longer serviceable or safe to add to. If your panel is one of them, replacing it is the right call independent of solar.
Corrosion and coastal damage
In Florida's coastal and humid environments, meter cans and panel interiors corrode. Rust on bus bars or breaker stabs is a hazard and a reason to replace rather than add on.
Adding storage or EV charging
A battery, an EV charger, or both change the load and backfeed picture. Homes stacking multiple new loads onto an old service are the most common upgrade candidates we see.
Grounding and bonding deficiencies
Older installations sometimes lack proper grounding or bonding, and those get corrected as part of bringing the service up to current code during the upgrade.

- Future loads — a battery, an EV charger, a pool heater — get blocked
- You pay a second mobilization later for work that could have been done once
- A change order lands mid-project on a number you never agreed to
- Known-defective equipment stays in service on a house with new generation on it

Do all solar installations require a panel upgrade?
No, and most do not. Plenty of Florida homes have services with room for the interconnection. The upgrade becomes necessary when the capacity math, physical breaker space, or the condition of the existing equipment does not allow a safe, code-compliant connection.
How do I know if my panel needs upgrading?
The panel label, the main breaker rating, the brand, and the physical condition tell most of the story, and a licensed electrician can read them in one visit. We check this during the site assessment rather than assuming.
How much does a panel upgrade cost?
It is driven by service size, whether the meter can is replaced, how the utility drop is handled, and the condition of the grounding system. It is a real line item, and we put it on the quote up front instead of surfacing it later.
Can I install solar without upgrading my panel?
Sometimes, by sizing the array to what the existing service can accept. That is a legitimate option, but it means accepting a smaller system, and it should be an explicit decision rather than a surprise.
How long does a panel upgrade take?
The physical work is usually a day, with a power interruption while the panel is swapped. The calendar around it is permit review, utility coordination for the disconnect, and the inspection.
Will my power be off during the upgrade?
Yes, for part of the day while the service is disconnected and the new panel is installed. We schedule it and tell you the window in advance so you can plan around refrigeration and work-from-home needs.
Does a panel upgrade need a permit?
Yes. Service and panel work is permitted and inspected electrical work in every Florida jurisdiction we operate in. Origin pulls the permit and schedules the inspection under license EC13012465.
Do I need an upgrade for an EV charger?
Often the same analysis applies. A Level 2 charger is a significant continuous load, and stacking it with solar and storage on an older service is exactly the scenario where capacity runs out.
What is a load calculation?
It is the code-required arithmetic that compares your service capacity against connected load and any backfed generation. It is how an electrician determines what your panel can legally accept, rather than guessing from the breaker rating alone.
Can you upgrade the panel and install solar at the same time?
Yes, and it is the efficient sequence. Origin does both trades in-house, so the panel work and the array are permitted and scheduled as one project instead of two mobilizations.
Is a subpanel an option instead?
Sometimes. Where the main service is adequate but breaker space is not, a subpanel can be the cleaner solution. Where the service itself is undersized or the equipment is obsolete, a subpanel just moves the problem.
Do you handle panel upgrades without solar?
Yes. Residential and commercial electrical is its own service line at Origin. If you need the service modernized and solar is a later conversation, that is a perfectly normal project for us.
