Does the battery have to move?

In most Florida homes, no. A Powerwall or comparable battery is mounted on a garage or exterior wall, not on the roof, so a reroof does not disturb it. What comes down is the array and, occasionally, roof-run conduit. The battery is still de-energized as part of a proper shutdown, and the gateway is involved in bringing the system back, but physically relocating the unit is the exception — typically only when the wall itself is being altered or the original placement was noncompliant.

Safe shutdown and startup order

A battery system holds stored energy independent of the grid, which is exactly why shutdown sequence is not optional. PV is isolated first, then the battery is shut down at the unit and its disconnect, then the system is separated from the utility. Startup runs the reverse. Doing this out of order — or having a roofing crew improvise it — risks equipment damage and creates a genuine shock hazard for people on the roof. This is licensed electrical work, performed under Florida license EC13012465.

What happens to your backup power

While the system is down you are on utility power only. If there is a storm in the window, you have no battery backup, which matters more in Florida than almost anywhere. That is a scheduling consideration rather than a technical one: we would rather move a start date than have a customer sit through an outage with a shut-down battery. If someone in the home depends on powered medical equipment, tell us during the inspection and we will plan the sequence around it.

Reconnecting without losing your setup

Bringing a battery system back is more than flipping breakers. The gateway has to re-establish its connection, the backup circuits need verification, and your reserve percentage, time-based control and storm-watch settings should come back the way you had them. We record the configuration before shutdown and confirm it against the app at handoff, along with a production check on the array against its pre-removal baseline.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Tesla Powerwall have to be removed for a roof replacement?

Usually not. Powerwalls are wall-mounted, so the roof work does not disturb them. The battery is de-energized as part of a safe shutdown, and the rooftop array is what comes down and goes back.

Who should shut down the battery before roofing?

A licensed electrical contractor. A battery stores energy independent of the grid, and an improper shutdown sequence is both an equipment risk and a real shock hazard for the crew on the roof.

Will I have backup power during the roof work?

No. While the system is shut down you are on utility power only. We schedule around forecasted weather and around medical or other critical power needs when you tell us about them up front.

Will I lose my Powerwall settings?

Not if the configuration is recorded before shutdown. We note the reserve percentage, operating mode and backup circuits, then confirm them against the app after reconnection.

Can I add a battery while my roof is being replaced?

It is the ideal moment. The array is already down, the electrician is already on site and permitting runs as one package, so you avoid paying for access and inspection twice.

Does a battery change the detach and reset cost?

It adds electrical scope — shutdown, gateway handling, reconnection and verification — but it rarely adds roofing scope, since the battery is not on the roof.

Will roof work void my battery warranty?

Not when the shutdown and reconnection are performed by a licensed contractor and documented. Unlicensed handling is where warranty disputes with the manufacturer begin.

How long is the whole system offline?

Typically about a week on a straightforward shingle project, longer on tile or if inspections and weather stretch the calendar. We give you the window in writing before starting.

Do you need a permit for the battery work?

Reconnection under an existing permitted installation is generally covered by the project's electrical permit. Adding a new battery requires its own permit and inspection, which we pull.

Can the conduit be re-routed while the roof is open?

Yes, and it is often worth doing. Roof-run conduit is a penetration and a leak path; consolidating or re-routing it while the deck is exposed is far cheaper than revisiting it later.

Do you work with batteries other than Powerwall?

Yes. Enphase, FranklinWH and other common systems follow the same principles: documented configuration, licensed shutdown, verified reconnection.
