Oak canopy and solar in Tampa: how a real shade study works

Grand oaks are the most common reason a Tampa solar quote misses. Here's what a real shade analysis measures and what tree trimming actually buys you.

Tampa's tree canopy is one of the best things about the city and the single most common reason a solar quote underperforms.

What a shade study actually measures

A credible study models the sun path for all twelve months, not one day. It produces a solar access percentage per roof plane — the share of annual available irradiance that plane actually receives. Anything above roughly 90% is clean. The 75–90% band is workable with panel-level electronics. Below 70%, that plane is usually not worth populating.

Winter is the problem, not summer

The sun sits lower in December and January. A tree that clears the roof in June throws a long shadow in winter, and winter is when your bill is lowest anyway — so the loss is real but less painful than it looks on a single-day simulation. Ask to see monthly numbers.

Panel-level electronics

Microinverters or optimisers let a shaded module drop without dragging its whole string down. On a shaded Tampa roof that is not an upsell, it is the correct design. See the string vs microinverter comparison.

Trimming vs removing

Trimming a limb buys a season or two; oaks grow back. Removal is a bigger decision and often restricted. Model both cases and decide with numbers rather than optimism, and never let a salesperson assume trimming that you have not agreed to.
