String inverters vs microinverters on a Tampa roof

Shade, roof planes and service access decide this — not brand loyalty. How we pick for Tampa homes.

Every Tampa solar proposal picks one of three architectures. The right answer depends on your roof, not on which brand the salesperson represents.

String inverter

One central inverter, modules wired in series. Cheapest per watt, one device to service, and the easiest to replace at year twelve. The weakness is shading: within a string, the weakest module drags the rest.

Good fit: a clean, unshaded south or west plane in Brandon, Riverview or newer Tampa subdivisions.

String plus optimizers

Adds a small device per module to handle mismatch, keeping the central inverter. Recovers most shade losses while keeping one serviceable inverter on the wall.

Good fit: mostly clean roofs with one problem area — a chimney, a vent stack, a single oak limb.

Microinverters

One inverter per module, mounted on the roof. Best shade tolerance and per-module monitoring. The tradeoff is that service means going back on the roof, and the electronics live in Florida attic-adjacent heat all year.

Good fit: Seminole Heights, Hyde Park and other canopy-heavy neighborhoods with several small roof planes and complex shade.

Heat matters in Tampa

All power electronics derate with temperature. Wall-mounted inverters belong on a shaded wall, not a west-facing garage wall in full afternoon sun. This is a five-minute design decision that affects twenty years of output.

Ask for this in the quote

Modeled annual kWh with the specific architecture proposed, plus the shade losses assumed. If two bids differ by 8% in production, this is usually why.
