Rapid shutdown on Tampa solar: what firefighters and inspectors look for

Rapid shutdown is a code requirement, an inspection item and a real safety feature. Here's what it does and where the labels and initiator have to be.

An array keeps making DC voltage whenever the sun is up, whether the house has power or not. Rapid shutdown exists so that stops mattering.

What it does

When triggered, module-level devices drop the voltage in the array's conductors to a safe level within seconds. That means a firefighter cutting into a roof, or an electrician working the service, isn't dealing with live high-voltage DC.

Where it lives

  • Module-level electronics — microinverters or optimisers — usually provide the function inherently.
  • An initiator (typically a clearly marked switch) must be at a readily accessible location near the service equipment.
  • Labels at the service disconnect, the inverter and the array identify the system and the shutdown location.

Why installs fail inspection

Almost always paperwork and placement, not equipment: missing or non-compliant labels, an initiator that isn't accessible, or a conduit route that isn't marked. It's an easy correction, but it costs a re-inspection trip.

What to check on your own system

Find the initiator. Know where it is before you need it, and make sure anyone else in the house does too.
