The Tampa solar inspection: what the inspector actually checks
Labels, rapid shutdown, grounding and attachment spacing. The list is short and failing it is avoidable.
Solar inspections fail for boring reasons. Almost none of them are about the panels.
The usual checklist
- Placards and labeling. Disconnect labels, warning signage at the meter and main panel, conductor markings. Missing labels are the single most common fail.
- Rapid shutdown. The system has to de-energize conductors at the array on command, with the initiation device correctly located and marked.
- Grounding and bonding. Continuous equipment grounding through racking and modules, correct conductor sizing, proper lugs.
- Attachment spacing and flashing. Mounts hitting structural members at the engineered spacing, with flashing appropriate to the roof covering.
- Conductor protection. Conduit supported, no exposed wiring on the roof surface, correct fill.
- Busbar calculation. The interconnection has to be legal against the panel's rating — this is where a panel upgrade enters the conversation.
Two-stage process
Most residential jobs get a building/structural review and an electrical inspection. Both must pass before the utility will authorize interconnection, which is a separate step with its own queue.
