Mini-splits and solar in Tampa: cutting the load before sizing the array

Every kilowatt-hour you don't use is cheaper than one you generate. How mini-splits, insulation and pool timers change the right Tampa system size.

Cooling dominates a Tampa electric bill. That means the cheapest solar kilowatt-hour is the one you never needed.

Do these first

  1. Attic insulation and air sealing. The highest-return item in almost every Florida home, and it makes every later step smaller.
  2. Duct sealing. Leaky ducts in a 130°F attic waste a large share of what the air handler produces.
  3. Right-size the cooling. An oversized central system short-cycles, dehumidifies poorly and runs inefficiently.

Where mini-splits fit

A ducted central system cools the whole house to serve one occupied room. A mini-split conditions the room you're in. In a Tampa home with a bonus room, garage conversion or a bedroom that's always too warm, adding a mini-split often lets you raise the central setpoint materially — and that shows up on every bill.

They also pair well with battery backup: a single mini-split is a realistic backed-up load, where whole-home central cooling usually is not.

Then size the array

Do the load work first, then pull twelve months of bills, then size. Sizing to a pre-efficiency bill means paying for panels to power waste.
