Before you buy solar in Tampa, look at the attic
Ventilation, insulation and duct leakage often cut a Tampa bill faster and cheaper than more panels.
An unvented Tampa attic in July runs far hotter than the outside air. Your air handler and ducts usually live in it. That is a compounding penalty on every cooling hour of the year.
Three checks worth doing first
- Insulation depth. Many Tampa homes built before the 2000s have settled or compressed insulation well below current recommendations for the climate zone.
- Ventilation balance. Ridge and soffit venting has to be balanced. Blocked soffits — often from blown insulation pushed into the eaves — turn a vented attic into an oven and shorten shingle life.
- Duct leakage. Leaky ducts in a 130°F attic dump conditioned air where nobody lives. This is frequently the single largest fixable load in the house.
