Base flood elevation drives equipment height
Much of the island sits in a mapped coastal flood zone. Electrical equipment installed as part of a solar project — inverters, rapid-shutdown gear, battery enclosures, sometimes the service panel itself — is expected to sit above the base flood elevation. That can mean:
- Wall-mounting the inverter high on an exterior wall instead of at eye level
- Relocating a battery from a ground-level garage to an interior wall or elevated platform
- Raising or relocating the meter and main disconnect during the job
Get the elevation certificate first
If the home has an elevation certificate, bring it to the site visit. It answers half the design questions in one page and prevents a redesign after plan review.
Batteries on the water

Roof condition still rules
Tile and metal are common here. A tile roof array needs a mount system designed for the tile profile, and broken tiles during install are a real cost line — ask how replacements are handled before you sign.
