What a Tampa solar system actually produces, month by month

Tampa's sunniest months are not its highest-bill months. Here's the seasonal shape of production and why your credits swing through the year.

People expect August to be the biggest solar month in Tampa. It isn't.

The seasonal shape

  • March–May are the strongest months. Long days, high sun angle, and the afternoon storm season has not started.
  • June–September have the longest days but the most cloud cover. Daily thunderstorms cut afternoon output, and high module temperatures reduce efficiency.
  • October–November recover somewhat as storms fade.
  • December–January are the low point. Short days and a low sun angle.

Heat is a real derate

Panels are rated at 25°C cell temperature. A dark Tampa roof in July puts modules well above that, and output drops roughly half a percent per degree over rating. Good designers already build this into the estimate; if your quote shows flat monthly production, it wasn't modeled.

Why credits swing

Under net metering you bank credits in spring, burn them in summer when the air conditioner runs constantly, and settle out over the year. A single month's bill tells you nothing. Judge the system on a rolling twelve months.
