How long do solar panels last in Tampa's heat and salt air?
Degradation rates, heat, humidity and coastal salt exposure — what actually shortens panel life near Tampa Bay and what to check in the warranty.
Modern modules are rated for decades, but "rated" and "in Tampa" are not the same sentence.
Normal degradation
Quality modules lose roughly 0.3–0.5% of output per year. After 25 years a good panel is typically still producing around 85–90% of its original rating. That's the baseline every warranty is written against.
What Tampa adds
- Heat. Sustained high cell temperatures accelerate the aging of backsheets, junction boxes and encapsulant. It doesn't destroy panels; it moves them toward the faster end of the degradation range.
- Humidity. Moisture ingress is the failure mode behind delamination and corroded connectors. Sealing quality matters more here than in Arizona.
- Salt air. Within a few miles of the bay or gulf, salt mist corrodes frames, fasteners and racking. Ask for salt-mist-certified modules and stainless or properly rated hardware near the water.
What fails first
Rarely the glass. Usually connectors, junction boxes, and — on cheap installs — the racking hardware. Inverters are the shortest-lived component in the system regardless of location.
Warranty terms worth reading
Product warranty length (distinct from the performance warranty), whether labor is included, whether shipping for a replacement module is covered, and whether the warranty survives the manufacturer changing hands.
