Solar on new construction in Tampa: what to run before drywall

Solar-ready is cheap during framing and expensive afterwards. Here's the short list builders and buyers should specify on a Tampa new build.

Adding solar to a finished house means chasing conduit through walls. Adding it to a house that was planned for it means a day of work.

Run this before drywall

  • Conduit from attic to the electrical panel. One oversized run costs very little now and saves an ugly exterior chase later.
  • A second run to the garage for an EV charger and to a likely battery wall.
  • Spare breaker space and a main breaker rating that leaves room for a solar backfeed. This alone avoids a five-figure service upgrade later.
  • A labelled junction point in the attic so no one has to guess.

Roof planning

South and west planes should be kept as clear as possible. Plumbing vents, bath fans and AC penetrations clustered on a north plane preserve the good roof for panels. That's a five-minute conversation with the mechanical trade and it is worth thousands.

Structural

Note the panel dead load in the truss package. It's a small number and getting it in the drawings up front avoids an engineering letter later.

Buying rather than building?

Ask the builder what's already run. "Solar-ready" is a marketing term with no fixed definition — get the specifics.
