Panels shade the deck and change airflow. Here's how ridge vents, off-ridge vents and arrays coexist.
Homeowners often worry that solar will cook the attic. In practice the shading usually helps — but the layout still has to respect the ventilation system.
Panels shade the deck
A module sits several inches off the roof with air moving underneath. The covered deck runs cooler than exposed shingle in a Tampa July, which slightly reduces heat gain into the attic. That's a small bonus, not a design goal.
Don't block the intake and exhaust path
Ventilation works as a system: intake at the soffits, exhaust at the ridge. Array layout has to keep that path clear.
- Ridge vents stay clear — modules set back from the ridge anyway for setback and wind reasons.
- Off-ridge box vents are the usual conflict. They sit in the middle of the best roof plane. Options are to design around them or, during a re-roof, convert to a continuous ridge vent and free up the field.
- Turbines are the worst case for array layout and the first thing to replace during a re-roof.
Best time to fix it
During a roof replacement. Converting to ridge-and-soffit ventilation costs little while the roof is open and it makes the solar layout far cleaner. Doing it after the array is up means a partial detach.
Also worth doing then
Air-sealing and topping up attic insulation while access is easy. It's the cheapest reduction to a Tampa cooling bill there is.
