Why your Tampa electric bill spikes in August (and what solar fixes)

Cooling load, humidity and duct losses stack in a Tampa August. Solar addresses part of that — here's which part.

August bills in Tampa are not a billing error. They're a runtime problem.

What's driving it

  • Cooling hours. The AC runs nearly continuously through late July and August. Runtime, not thermostat setting, drives the bill.
  • Humidity. A lot of your system's energy goes to removing moisture, not lowering temperature. That's why the house can feel clammy at 76°F and the unit still runs.
  • Attic and duct losses. Ducts in a 130°F attic bleed cooled air. In older Tampa homes this is frequently 15–25% of the cooling energy.
  • Longer daylight and pool season. Pumps, lights and dehumidification all run more.

What solar offsets

Solar production peaks during the same daylight hours your AC is working hardest, so a correctly sized array covers a large share of the daytime cooling load. What it does not do is cover the overnight portion unless you add storage or the utility's billing carries the credit forward — see Florida net metering.

Do these first

Air-seal and insulate the attic, seal duct joints, and service the AC. Every kilowatt-hour removed there is a kilowatt-hour of array you don't have to buy. Then size the system off twelve months of real usage.
