Know your zone before you design

Evacuation zones and FEMA flood zones are different maps, and both matter. A home two blocks from the bay in a low-lying block has different siting constraints than one on the higher interior ridge. Design around the water elevation you might actually see, not the one you would prefer.

Elevate what you can

Inverters, battery enclosures, disconnects and sub-panels should be mounted as high as code, clearance and the equipment manual allow. A garage wall at four feet is a meaningfully different outcome than the same equipment at eighteen inches. Where interior placement is available and permitted, take it.

Enclosure ratings help with rain, not with submersion

An outdoor-rated enclosure is designed for weather exposure. Nothing at residential scale is designed to be submerged in saltwater and returned to service. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise.

The hard rule after a flood

Any electrical equipment that was underwater gets evaluated by a licensed contractor and, in nearly every case, replaced. Saltwater leaves conductive residue and starts corrosion that will not announce itself for months. Batteries in particular are never restarted after immersion — that is a safety issue, not a warranty preference.

Documentation is your leverage

Photograph equipment, model numbers and serial plates when the system is installed, and again before each season. Insurance and warranty claims move faster with dated evidence.

Rooftop gear is safer than ground gear

One practical upside: modules on the roof are above surge. It is the balance of system at ground level that carries the risk, which is why placement is worth arguing about during design rather than after.
