Solar plus battery storage in St. Petersburg: how the pairing actually works
Why a grid-tied array alone goes dark in an outage, what a battery changes, and how St. Pete homes are typically configured.
The single most common surprise we hear in St. Petersburg is that a homeowner's solar array does not run the house during an outage. That is not a defect. It is how grid-tied inverters are required to behave.
Anti-islanding, in plain terms
When Duke Energy's line goes down, your inverter must stop exporting so line crews are not working on an energized wire. Without storage and a transfer point, the array goes dark with everything else — even at noon under a clear sky.
What a battery actually adds
A battery system introduces a backup boundary. During an outage the system disconnects from the grid, energizes a protected sub-panel, and lets the array keep charging the battery through the day. That last part matters on the peninsula: an outage that stretches past 24 hours is survivable when the sun refills the battery each afternoon, and is not when you are running off a fixed charge.
How St. Pete homes get configured
Most installs here fall into one of three shapes:
- Essentials backup. Refrigerator, a few outlets, internet, a couple of lighting circuits, and often one mini-split or a single AC zone. The cheapest path to a livable house.
- Extended backup. Essentials plus well or pool equipment, a larger AC load, and kitchen circuits, usually with load management so the battery is not drained by a compressor start.
- Whole-home. Everything, generally requiring more than one battery and a service that can carry it.
The panel question comes first
Older bungalows in Old Northeast, Kenwood and the Historic Uptown blocks frequently run 100A services with no room for the additional breakers a backup boundary needs. A load calculation and a service review happen before anyone quotes a battery. Skipping that step is how a project stalls at inspection.
Salt air and siting
Coastal St. Pete is a corrosive environment. Battery and inverter equipment lives in a garage or shaded exterior wall away from direct salt spray where possible, and outdoor-rated enclosures are specified accordingly. Manufacturers publish operating temperature ranges for a reason — a west-facing unbaked wall in August is not a good location.
