Wind ratings, uplift and attachment: how solar is mounted for St. Petersburg storms

"Hurricane-rated" is a marketing phrase. The real answer is an engineered attachment plan reviewed against Florida Building Code wind loads for your specific address, roof pitch and array location.

Wind speed is address-specific

Design wind speed varies across Pinellas County, and exposure category changes with what surrounds the house — an open waterfront lot on the bay is not the same as an interior block in Crescent Lake. Both feed the uplift calculation.

Uplift concentrates at the edges

Wind does not load a roof evenly. Corner and edge zones see the highest uplift, which is why plan sets specify tighter attachment spacing there and often keep modules set back from the perimeter. A layout that crowds the edge to squeeze in two more modules is buying production with risk.

Attachment is where jobs are won or lost

Every penetration goes into structure, not sheathing, and gets flashed properly for the roof type — a tile roof, a metal standing seam and a shingle roof each want a different detail. Sealant is a supplement to flashing, never a substitute for it. Salt air means stainless or coated hardware.

Engineering and permitting

Pinellas jurisdictions expect a stamped plan set showing module layout, attachment spacing, fastener specification and the load path. That review is a feature, not friction. It is also why a permit takes the time it takes.

Module and equipment ratings
