Adding storage to an existing St. Petersburg solar system
Inverter compatibility, AC- versus DC-coupled retrofits, panel work and permitting for Pinellas homes that already went solar.
Plenty of St. Pete homes went solar before storage was on the table, then lived through an outage and changed their minds. A retrofit is normal work — it just starts with a compatibility question.
Start at the inverter
What you have now determines the path:
- String inverter with a compatible hybrid upgrade. Sometimes the cleanest route, sometimes a full inverter replacement.
- Microinverters. Usually points to an AC-coupled battery, since each module already produces AC.
- Older or discontinued equipment. May need replacement before storage is possible. Not a reason to skip storage, just a line item to know about.
AC- versus DC-coupled
DC coupling routes solar into the battery before conversion and is generally more efficient, but it wants compatible hardware. AC coupling adds a battery inverter alongside what you have and is the flexible retrofit answer for most existing systems. Both are legitimate; the right one depends on your equipment.
The backup boundary
A retrofit almost always adds a protected sub-panel and a transfer point. Deciding which circuits move onto it is the most important homeowner decision in the whole project — go through the panel schedule circuit by circuit and be realistic about air conditioning.
Service capacity
Older Pinellas homes with 100A services frequently need an upgrade before storage is added. A load calculation tells you early, which is far better than finding out at inspection.
Permitting and interconnection
Adding storage is a permitted change, and Duke wants an updated interconnection application. Expect weeks, and expect a re-inspection. That is normal.
Warranty care
If your original array is under a workmanship warranty, tell us. Retrofits are done so that existing coverage is not disturbed where that is possible, and you should know in writing if it is not.
