Reading a TECO bill after solar: credits, charges and the parts that never go away
Line by line through a Tampa Electric statement once an array is producing, and why the bill rarely reads zero.
The most common call we get from a new Tampa solar owner is not "my system is broken." It is "why do I still have a bill?" The answer is usually on the statement itself.
The three numbers to find
- Energy delivered (kWh). What you pulled from Tampa Electric — nights, cloudy afternoons, the August air-conditioning peak.
- Energy received (kWh). What your array exported when it produced more than the house used.
- Net kWh and any credit balance. Export credits offset delivered kWh; a surplus rolls forward month to month.
The charges that survive solar
Even at a perfect one-to-one offset, an interconnected customer still pays the fixed monthly customer charge and applicable taxes and fees. That is why a well-sized Tampa system lands at a small bill, not a zero bill, and why any salesperson promising "no more electric bill" is telling you something the tariff does not support. Verify current terms with the Florida Public Service Commission and your own tariff sheet.
Why summer and winter look opposite
Tampa's load curve is cooling-dominated. June through September the house often outruns the array in the afternoon; February through April production overshoots and banks credit. Judge a system on twelve months, not on one statement.
When the bill really is wrong
Flag it if production monitoring shows a plane offline, if received kWh drops sharply with no weather explanation, or if the meter never switched to a net-metered read after permission to operate. Those are fixable and worth a service visit — see our maintenance and monitoring notes.
