Solar, batteries, EV charging and heat pumps all pull on the same service. Here's when it actually has to grow.
"You'll need a panel upgrade" is either a legitimate code requirement or an easy upsell. The load calculation is how you tell them apart.
What forces an upgrade
- Busbar rating vs. solar backfeed. Code limits how much a solar breaker can backfeed a given busbar alongside the main. Many 100-amp and some older 150-amp panels hit that ceiling quickly.
- Total calculated load. Add an EV charger and a heat pump to a 1960s Tampa service and the arithmetic decides for you.
- Panel condition or obsolete equipment. Some legacy panels should be replaced on safety grounds regardless of the new load.
- No physical breaker space that can be safely resolved.
What avoids one
Line-side taps, supply-side connections, load-management devices that shed the EV charger when the house peaks, and simply setting a charger to a lower amperage. A good electrician offers these before quoting a service change.
