Winter is the worst case
Shade models that only consider summer are useless. In December the sun sits low and shadows run long, so a tree that's irrelevant in July can cover a third of a plane at 3 p.m. in winter. Ask to see modeled production by month, not just an annual number.
Model by plane, not by roof
Averaging shade across a whole roof hides the truth. A clean west plane and a heavily shaded south plane average out to "moderate shade" on paper and to a disappointing system in practice. Each plane gets its own number.
Module-level electronics earn their keep here
With a string inverter and no optimization, a shaded module can drag its string. Microinverters or DC optimizers isolate that, so one shaded module costs you one module's output. On a shaded Pinellas Park lot, that's not an upsell — it's the correct design.
Sometimes the answer is a smaller array
A well-placed 6 kW array on clean planes often out-produces a poorly placed 8 kW array with two shaded strings, and costs less. A contractor willing to quote you a smaller system is telling you something true.
Trimming vs. removal
Trimming for solar access is a normal conversation. Removing a grand oak usually isn't, and in many jurisdictions isn't your call alone. Design around it.
