Hurricane backup power in Pinellas Park: evacuation zones change the math

If you evacuate, backup protects the house. If you shelter, it protects you. Those are different systems.

Pinellas County has the most aggressive evacuation posture in Tampa Bay, and it should change how you plan backup power. Start with one question: in a serious storm, are you here?

If you evacuate

Your backup system's job is protecting an empty house — refrigeration, the freezer, a sump if you have one, network gear so you can see cameras remotely. That's a small, efficient load. A single battery running a handful of critical circuits does this well and needs no fuel, no exercise cycle and no one home to start it.

If you shelter in place

Now you need air conditioning, or at least enough cooling to keep the house survivable. That's a different order of magnitude. Options:

  • Two batteries plus solar recharge. Daytime production refills the bank, so a multi-day outage doesn't run you flat. Works if your roof can host enough array.
  • A standby generator on natural gas or propane. Runs indefinitely with fuel, handles full-house load, but needs annual service and permitting. See whole-house generators.
  • Both. Battery for silence and instant transfer, generator for the long tail.

Storm surge and equipment height

Pinellas Park's lower-lying sections take flood rules seriously. Mounting height for inverters and batteries is a code and common-sense item. Put critical equipment high; don't put a battery where water goes.

The unglamorous checklist

  1. Know your evacuation zone before June
  2. Know which circuits are on backup — in writing
  3. Test transfer once a year, not during a warning
  4. Keep the array's rapid-shutdown label visible for first responders
