Hillsborough County solar permits: where the calendar actually goes

From signed paperwork to permission to operate in Tampa, with the steps that quietly eat weeks.

A Tampa solar install is one or two days on the roof inside a process that runs weeks. Knowing which stage you are in prevents most of the frustration.

Stage 1 — Site capture and engineering

Roof measurements, plane pitch and azimuth, attic framing check, service panel photos, and a shade model. Engineering stamps follow. Anything missing here — an unclear panel label, no attic access on install day — pushes everything right.

Stage 2 — Permit submission

Plans go to the authority having jurisdiction: City of Tampa for addresses inside city limits, Hillsborough County for unincorporated addresses. They are different queues with different plan reviewers, and a Temple Terrace or Plant City address is different again.

Stage 3 — Install

One to two days for a typical residential array; longer if a service panel upgrade or roof work is bundled.

Stage 4 — Inspection

Building and electrical inspection, sometimes on separate visits. A failed inspection is normally a correction item, not a redo — but it costs a scheduling cycle.

Stage 5 — Interconnection and PTO

Tampa Electric reviews the interconnection application, may swap the meter, and issues permission to operate. Do not energize before PTO.

What homeowners can actually speed up

Respond to document requests same-day, confirm HOA architectural approval early where one exists, and make sure the panel and attic are accessible. Everything else is queue time. More detail lives in our permitting guide.
