EV charger installation in Tampa: the load calculation comes first

What a Level 2 charger asks of a Tampa home's service, and when a panel upgrade is unavoidable.

Everyone shops the charger first. The charger is the easy part.

The order that avoids surprises

  1. Load calculation. A licensed electrician totals existing demand and compares it to service capacity. This is a code requirement, not paperwork theater.
  2. Panel assessment. Space for a double-pole breaker, busbar rating, and condition of an older panel. Some legacy panels should be replaced regardless of the EV.
  3. Circuit design. A 40A or 48A continuous charger needs a properly sized circuit and conductor run — garage-to-panel distance matters in Tampa's common slab-on-grade layouts.
  4. Permit and inspection. Hillsborough County or City of Tampa depending on address.

When you can skip the panel upgrade

Load management devices and lower charger amperage can fit a charger onto a constrained service. For most drivers a 32A charger overnight is plenty — that is far more range per night than a typical Tampa commute uses.

Pairing with solar

If solar is coming, size the panel work once for the array, the charger and a possible future battery. Doing three separate electrical projects costs more than one. Details on our EV charger page.
