Panel upgrades in Pinellas Park: when your service has to grow first

The busbar rule, in plain English
Code limits how much backfed current a panel's busbar can accept relative to its rating. Practically: a 100-amp panel with a 100-amp main has very little headroom for a solar backfeed breaker. Options are a line-side tap, a supply-side connection, or a service upgrade. Which one is right depends on your equipment, not on preference.
Obsolete panels
Certain older panel brands found in 1960s–70s Florida housing are known hazards and are generally not something to backfeed or expand. If yours is one, replacement is the project — solar comes after.
The load calculation
Before anyone quotes a Level 2 EV charger or a battery, a documented load calculation should exist. It accounts for HVAC, water heating, range, dryer and the new load together. A charger quote with no load calc is a guess.
What an upgrade involves
New panel, new main breaker, grounding and bonding brought current, coordination with Duke for the service disconnect and reconnect, and a county inspection. It's a one-day job on most homes plus scheduling with the utility.
Do it once
If solar, a battery and a charger are all on your two-year list, size the service for all three now. Doing the panel three times costs three times.
