How Long Does Solar Panel Installation Take in Tampa?
Panels usually go up in one to two days. The full timeline from signed agreement to permission to operate runs closer to six to twelve weeks in Central Florida. Here is where the time actually goes.
Almost everyone asks the same question first: how long does it take to install solar panels? The honest answer has two halves. The physical installation is fast. The paperwork around it is not.
The install itself: one to two days
For a typical Tampa-area home, our crews are on the roof for one to two days. A larger system, a complex roof with multiple planes, or a tile roof can push that to three. That covers racking, panels, conduit, inverter, and the electrical tie-in at your main panel.
You do not need to be home the entire time. Power is usually off for a couple of hours on the day the system is tied into your panel.
The full timeline: six to twelve weeks
Here is where the calendar actually goes in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, and Polk counties.
Site survey and design (about 1 week). We measure the roof, check the age and condition of the shingles, look at the main service panel, and pull sun data for your specific roof planes. If your roof is near the end of its life, this is when we talk about a roof and solar package rather than mounting new panels on an old roof.
Engineering and permitting (2 to 5 weeks). Every jurisdiction moves at its own pace. City of Tampa, unincorporated Hillsborough, St. Petersburg, and Lakeland all have different queues. This is the single biggest variable in the timeline and the part nobody controls.
Installation (1 to 2 days). Covered above.
Inspection (1 to 2 weeks). A county or city inspector signs off on the electrical and structural work.
Utility interconnection and permission to operate (2 to 4 weeks). TECO, Duke Energy, or your co-op swaps or reprograms the meter and issues permission to operate. Your system stays off until this arrives.
What actually makes it slower
- Permitting backlogs after a storm season.
- HOA architectural review, if your community requires it. Florida law limits what an HOA can restrict, but the review itself still takes time.
- A main electrical panel that needs upgrading before it can carry solar.
- An aging roof discovered during the survey.
