Can You Install Solar Panels Yourself in Florida?

What DIY can work for

Small off-grid setups. An RV, a shed, a well pump, a boat, a detached workshop that is not tied to your house panel. Ground-mounted panels charging a battery bank with no utility connection. These are genuinely doable projects for a handy person.

Where it stops working

The moment the system connects to your home's electrical panel and to the grid, three things enter the picture:

Permits. Central Florida jurisdictions require permitted, inspected electrical and structural work. Plan sets generally need engineering sign-off. An unpermitted rooftop array is a problem at inspection, at insurance renewal, and at closing when you sell.

Utility interconnection. TECO, Duke, and the co-ops have interconnection agreements with equipment, labeling, and disconnect requirements. They will not grant permission to operate to a system that does not meet them. Until they do, your panels produce nothing you can use.

Roof penetrations. This is the one people underestimate. A residential array means dozens of holes through your roof deck, in a state with afternoon downpours and hurricane season. A leak that shows up eighteen months later is not covered by anyone, and it can quietly rot decking above your ceiling. It also frequently voids whatever roof warranty you had.

The insurance and resale angle

Florida homeowners insurance is already a difficult market. Carriers ask about roof work. Unpermitted structural and electrical modifications are a real exposure, both at renewal and at claim time. Buyers' inspectors flag them too.

The honest middle ground

If you want to reduce cost, the useful levers are not swinging the hammer yourself. They are: right-sizing the system to your actual usage instead of overbuilding, choosing the funding path that fits your situation, and bundling roof work with solar instead of paying to remove and reinstall panels later.
