FLORIDA UTILITY FACTS · CHECKED OCTOBER 16, 2026

Your utility bill changes.
Solar gives you another option.

Generate electricity on your roof instead of buying every kilowatt-hour from the grid. The case for solar starts with the facts—not a promise that utility rates only rise.

TAMPA ELECTRIC / TECO

About 32% higher

TECO reports a typical bill rising from $118.07 in December 2021 to $156.43 in August 2026. That is a nominal, multi-year comparison—not a yearly increase.

Its January 2026 increase was $8.88 per 1,000 kWh. But the August removal of a temporary storm charge reduced bills by $19.95 per 1,000 kWh. Both the increase and the reduction belong in the story.

DUKE ENERGY FLORIDA

Rates can fall, too

Duke announced about $44 less per 1,000 kWh in March 2026 than January: roughly $33 from storm-charge removal and $11 from a seasonal reduction.

This historical comparison is not today’s total bill or a permanent annual discount. A solar proposal should use the current account tariff and account for seasonal changes—not extend a temporary surcharge for 25 years.

WHY HOMEOWNERS CHOOSE SOLAR

Buy less grid power.
Plan around your home.

A well-designed system can reduce purchased electricity and your exposure to price changes on the energy it replaces. Savings depend on production, consumption, export credits and the complete project cost.

Fixed-payment terms, when offered, can make the solar portion more predictable. They do not freeze utility charges, and leases or financing may have escalators, fees or other conditions to review.

For outage protection, pair solar with compatible storage and properly configured backup equipment. Standard grid-connected panels alone generally shut down during outages. DOE: solar and backup power ↗

When is solar the better choice?

When your roof and sunlight are suitable, the equipment fits your needs, and the full cost compares favorably with buying that electricity from your utility. Heavy shade, near-term roof replacement or unfavorable payment terms may change the answer. DOE homeowner guide ↗

Compare solar payments + remaining utility charges + expected maintenance against the utility-only alternative over the same period. Test flat and lower utility-rate scenarios as well as increases.

Net metering does not mean every bill disappears. For example, FPL states a $30 minimum base bill; year-end surplus is credited at its average annual generation cost, not promised as a retail-rate cash payout. Other charges can apply. FPL net-metering rules ↗

WHAT THIS IS

A practical second look before you sign.

This is not an automated savings promise. Origin reviews the records you provide and identifies questions, missing scope and assumptions worth confirming.

You can begin without an existing proposal. A recent bill, twelve months of usage, roof information and planned future loads make the review more useful.
