THE SHORT ANSWER
Tesla says the Permission to Export control can allow excess solar to reach the grid, but owners should first confirm that the utility has issued all approvals, often called permission to operate. [1]
Find the utility evidence first
Look for the approval notice tied to the service address and current system. An installer text saying “you are good” is not the same as the utility record. If equipment changed after approval, ask whether the interconnection authorization still covers the installed configuration.
Understand what “No” may do
For compatible integrated-inverter systems, Tesla says a No setting can reduce solar production when the battery is full so export does not occur. Lower generation in that state can be expected control behavior rather than panel failure. Record the banner and battery state before requesting service.
Do not bypass a restriction
A Grid Exporting Restricted message may reflect the commissioned settings or utility permission. Do not toggle around it based on an internet tutorial. Ask the installer or utility what remains incomplete. Exporting energy is an interconnection matter, even if the app presents a simple switch.
Coordinate third-party installations
Tesla notes that a Certified Installer installation may require the owner to change the setting after PTO, while Tesla-installed systems may update automatically. Identify who commissioned your system and follow the applicable process. Origin will not claim another installer’s approval as its own.
Document the final state
Save the PTO notice, app setting and first normal energy-flow screenshot. If production remains constrained after authorized export is enabled, collect the timeline for service. This separates a configuration question from an equipment diagnosis and helps an orphaned-system provider start with evidence.
Before your next conversation
- Locate utility PTO for the current equipment.
- Record any export-restriction banner.
- Change settings only through the authorized process.
