THE SHORT ANSWER
Design, permitting, installation, inspection, and utility approval are separate milestones. Ask which step your project is on and what must happen next; a completed installation does not necessarily mean the system can operate.
Design and review
The project begins with a site-specific scope and necessary plans. Site conditions or equipment changes can require design updates.
Permit coordination
The relevant building department reviews the required submission. The permitting authority and review process depend on the property and project type.
Installation and inspection
After the necessary approvals, installation and required inspections take place. Any corrections must be addressed before the applicable closeout steps.
Utility approval for solar
A grid-connected solar installation may have a separate utility interconnection and permission-to-operate process. Installed equipment is not the same as authorization to operate.
Turn the conversation into a plan
Keep a simple milestone log with the submission date, the party reviewing the work, and the next action owner. A permit correction may require an updated drawing; an inspection correction may require a return visit. Ask for explanations of those specific items rather than a generic “pending” update. Before scheduling around an activation date, confirm whether the date depends on the utility or building department. At handoff, keep the available permit closeout and utility approval documents with the equipment records.
Questions for your project
- Confirm the permitting jurisdiction for your address.
- Ask who submits the utility interconnection request.
- Keep permit and application reference numbers.
- Confirm authorization and monitoring status before using the system.
Make it specific to your home.
Ask which milestones depend on your building department or utility.
