Powerwall stopped during an outage: overload and low energy are different events

The next step depends on whether large loads exceeded power capability or stored energy fell into standby. Record the app message before restarting anything.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Tesla says an overload may follow simultaneous energy-intensive loads and Powerwall can try to restart after those loads are turned off. A low-energy battery enters standby and follows a different solar-recharge process. [1]

Capture the event before resetting

Note the time, charge percentage, app notification and appliances that were starting. If there is smoke, heat, flood exposure or damaged wiring, keep clear and contact emergency or qualified safety help. This guide addresses normal manufacturer-described behavior, not visibly damaged equipment.

Recognize an overload pattern

Air conditioning, vehicle charging, electric heat and dishwashers can create large or overlapping demand. Tesla advises turning off energy-intensive loads after an overload so Powerwall can attempt a restart. Do not repeatedly reintroduce every load at once; use the installed operating guidance.

Recognize a low-energy pattern

Tesla says a battery below 10% during an outage can enter standby and, with solar, periodically attempt to recharge during daylight. If there is insufficient solar to serve the home and charge storage, the system may remain unavailable. Cloud cover and household load matter.

Keep power and energy separate

An overload concerns too much power at a moment; standby concerns insufficient stored energy. Adding battery energy capacity and increasing available output are related but different design questions. A service review should identify which limit occurred before recommending equipment.

Prepare the evidence for support

Export the outage-period graph, list active circuits and save alerts. If normal restart guidance fails, contact manufacturer support or a qualified provider. Origin can review supported existing systems, but availability, diagnostic scope and any fee are confirmed before service.

Before your next conversation

  • Record charge level, loads and the exact alert.
  • Turn off high-demand loads before an authorized restart.
  • Keep damaged equipment untouched.
