THE SHORT ANSWER
For a third-party solar installation with Powerwall, Tesla tells the buyer to contact support after the sale with a copy of the transfer deed plus photographs of the sticker on the Gateway and every Powerwall. [1]
Understand when the transfer starts
Tesla says this ownership transfer is processed after the transaction is complete and the new homeowner contacts Tesla. A seller can prepare records, but should not promise that the buyer’s energy account is already active before closing. Leased systems follow a different support path.
Capture labels safely
Photograph only labels that are accessible without removing covers, climbing or reaching around energized equipment. Include the entire label and a wider location photo. If a label is inaccessible, tell support and let a qualified provider obtain it; never open a Gateway to improve a picture.
Keep the deed copy controlled
Use the support channel named by the manufacturer and send only the documentation requested. Store the confirmation with the closing records. The transfer deed proves the new homeowner relationship for this process; it does not describe system condition or settle financing obligations.
Transfer utility and monitoring separately
The manufacturer account, local utility account and any solar monitoring platform may each require their own steps. Create three checklist lines and close each with evidence. Seeing Powerwall in the app does not prove net-metering enrollment, and a utility agreement does not prove all app permissions transferred.
Establish a condition baseline
After access is working, export or screenshot current status, alerts and recent energy data. If something is missing, provide the model labels and symptom date to Origin for a supported maintenance-scope review. Do not treat successful account transfer as a warranty or inspection.
Before your next conversation
- Save the completed transfer deed.
- Photograph accessible Gateway and Powerwall labels.
- Track manufacturer, utility and financing handoffs separately.

Need help with the system you already have?
Send Origin the transferred equipment record if you need an existing-system condition review.
Request solar service →Equipment support, diagnostic fees, availability and accepted work are confirmed before service. A request is not a confirmed appointment.
