Why an FPL solar tier is not determined by the inverter label alone

Work through FPL’s published DC-to-AC gross rating method and understand why a small layout revision can change an interconnection tier.

THE SHORT ANSWER

FPL publishes an AC gross power rating equal to the array’s DC rating multiplied by 0.85. Its Tier 1 ends at 10 kW AC gross. Use that application definition, not an inverter model name, to discuss your tier. [1]

Start with the module schedule

The array DC rating comes from the modules specified in the design. In a hypothetical proposal, 27 modules rated at 430 watts total 11,610 watts, or 11.61 kW DC. Applying the published factor gives 9.8685 kW AC gross. Those chosen module quantities illustrate the arithmetic only; they are not an Origin equipment offer or a recommendation to maximize a threshold.

Check a revision before dismissing it as minor

Adding one of those hypothetical modules produces 12.04 kW DC. Multiplying by 0.85 gives 10.234 kW AC gross, above the stated Tier 1 limit. The extra panel changes more than the drawing. Ask the project team to show the utility classification on each revision, together with the corresponding application requirements. Do not round the underlying figures early to make a system appear to remain in a lower tier.

Separate three numbers with three purposes

Array DC capacity, inverter AC output and the utility’s application gross rating may all appear in a proposal. Label each one. The application arithmetic is not a prediction of instantaneous rooftop output or annual energy production. Nor is a lower inverter label a substitute for the utility’s gross-rating method. A comparison becomes clearer when the designer explains which number is being used for each decision.

Ask for the complete consequence, not only the tier name

Have the installer identify the current documents, insurance evidence, fees and equipment requirements applicable to the proposed tier. Obtain any insurance advice from your insurer or licensed agent, using the utility’s actual requirements. A solar estimate cannot establish that an existing policy satisfies them. Keep those costs and decisions visible without assuming that moving into a different tier makes the project automatically unsuitable.

Confirm before finalizing the layout
