Tampa solar quotes near a TECO tier boundary: check the application scope

Separate the quoted array size from the utility rating, then compare the documentation and costs included in a Tampa solar installation.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Ask the installer to identify the AC rating used for Tampa Electric’s application and show which agreement applies. A proposal’s headline panel capacity is not enough to verify the application scope. [1]

Create three clearly labeled capacity fields

On each proposal, write down the panel count and model, the total module nameplate capacity in kW DC, and the inverter model with its stated AC output. Add a separate field for the rating used on the utility application. Ask the designer to show how that last number was determined. It should be traceable to equipment and the utility’s definition, rather than copied from a sales headline.

For a simple arithmetic example, 25 panels labeled 400 watts total 10,000 watts, or 10 kW DC. That multiplication does not independently establish the utility tier. Avoid comparing one contractor’s DC figure with another contractor’s AC figure as if both describe the same measurement.

Identify what crossing a boundary changes

Tampa Electric lists Tier 1 at 10 kW AC or less and Tier 2 above 10 through 100 kW AC. Its published Tier 2 requirements include an application fee and liability coverage, with continuing insurance documentation. [1] Ask the project team to identify the applicable obligations and put the related costs or exclusions in the written proposal.

Do not shrink or enlarge a design merely to land on a preferred headline number. Request an explanation of how each option serves the household’s measured usage and roof constraints. If two designs fall in different tiers, compare the complete project and ongoing responsibilities, not just the additional panels.

Make equipment substitutions visible

Use a short change record whenever the equipment changes: original model, proposed model, quantity, reason, revised utility rating and effect on price. Ask whether the application or drawings need revision and who handles it. A substitution described as equivalent should still have a documented approval path.

Keep the comparison on a single dated page alongside the quote. This helps the homeowner, designer and application contact discuss the same configuration. It also makes an unresolved capacity or insurance question easier to spot before signing.

Request a complete direct-price comparison

Ask Origin Direct for a property-specific review showing equipment, installation scope, permitting and utility responsibilities, exclusions and available payment terms. Record who confirms the rating and who follows the utility application. A low equipment price is harder to evaluate when required project work is left unspecified.

Bring the actual utility bill rather than assuming every Tampa address has the same provider. These tier details concern Tampa Electric; another account needs its own utility review. Keep the accepted equipment schedule with the final proposal so a later change can be checked against the original decision.

Before your next conversation

  • Record DC module capacity and inverter AC output separately.
  • Request the utility application rating and its calculation.
  • Identify the agreement, documentation and ongoing obligations.
  • List included costs and exclusions for each design.
