SECO solar approvals: separate the permit jurisdiction from the cooperative

Track county or municipal inspections and SECO’s utility review as two connected but independent project lanes.

THE SHORT ANSWER

SECO does not replace the local permitting authority, and a passed local inspection does not by itself prove cooperative authorization. Keep both closeout records.

Find the correct jurisdiction

Confirm whether the property’s county or municipality issues the permit. A postal city does not always identify the authority. Record its permit number and inspection contact.

Name the SECO milestone

Use the cooperative’s current terminology and application reference when asking for status. “Approved” can describe a document review, not necessarily meter work or authorization to operate.

Route corrections accurately

Send permit corrections to the party responsible for jurisdictional drawings or field work. Send SECO questions through the cooperative’s current channel. Share revised technical documents where both reviews depend on them.

Close both lanes

Retain final inspection evidence and SECO’s final communication before treating the owner packet as complete. Follow instructions about energization and meter access.

Before your next conversation

  • Confirm the permit authority.
  • Track the SECO reference.
  • Assign each correction correctly.
  • Save both final records.
