THE SHORT ANSWER
Tesla says the Certified Installer sets Grid Charging availability by default. A restricted message commonly appears when the utility prevents charging or a third party owns the system; the app control is not offered in every installation. [1]
Identify the ownership model
Find out whether you purchased the battery, financed it, lease it or receive service under another agreement. A third-party owner may control settings that a cash-purchase homeowner expects to manage. Read the executed documents instead of relying on what another household sees in its app.
Ask what was commissioned
Request the commissioning record and the installer’s explanation of the grid-charging selection. Tesla says availability is installer-set, so a missing toggle is not automatically an app bug. Record the utility, rate plan and any interconnection limit associated with the decision.
Separate three charging events
Ordinary homeowner grid charging, protective charging at low energy and charging during Storm Watch or a program event are not identical. Tesla notes that Powerwall can sometimes charge to preserve itself or during designated modes regardless of the ordinary setting. [1] Label the actual event before alleging unauthorized operation.
Do not use outdated tax folklore
Tesla notes that federal storage-source charging guidance changed in 2023, but current household tax eligibility is a separate issue and the federal residential credit rules changed again after 2025. Consult a tax professional; an app setting neither creates nor proves a tax benefit.
Escalate with a precise question
Send the installer or support team the restricted message, ownership type, utility and date. Ask whether the restriction is intentional, required or a commissioning error. Origin can review supported equipment and the existing-system scope, but cannot override utility or owner limitations.
