“Calibration in Progress” on Powerwall is not automatically a battery failure

Tesla describes periodic calibration as normal. Learn why reserve, solar flow and grid settings may temporarily look different before opening a repair case.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Tesla says Powerwall calibration is a normal accuracy process, often occurring naturally or through a dedicated cycle every 30–90 days. It may charge to 100%, discharge below 20% and temporarily behave differently from ordinary settings. [1]

Read the banner before changing settings

Confirm the app explicitly says Calibration in Progress and record when it began. Do not diagnose failure from an unusual charge percentage alone. Tesla notes that calibration may extend beyond the backup reserve and can temporarily change how solar serves the home.

Expect a full operating range

Calibration requires charging to 100% and sometimes discharging below 20%. That can look inconsistent with the homeowner’s preferred reserve. Tesla also says solar may not power home loads or charge the battery during parts of the process, and some export or grid-charging settings may be temporarily ignored within utility restrictions. [1]

Know what can lengthen it

Utility import or export limits, busbar protections and permanent site power limits can slow the required cycling. Tesla says a calibration attempt exits after 72 hours and can try again later. Record the banner duration and constraints instead of repeatedly power-cycling equipment.

Use the supported delay option carefully

Eligible Powerwall and app versions may allow one delay within a cycle. Check the manufacturer’s current version requirements in the app before relying on that option. A delay is scheduling, not a repair, and the calibration still needs to complete later.

Escalate the right symptom

If the banner clears and an alert, lost capacity indication or operating problem remains, capture the post-calibration evidence. Send the event dates and screenshots through the manufacturer or a supported service review. Origin will confirm equipment support and scope before accepting work.

Before your next conversation

  • Record the exact calibration banner and start time.
  • Avoid repeated resets during a normal cycle.
  • Document any alert that remains after calibration.
