Compare the same installation scope in each quote. A charger price, a standard wiring allowance and a complete site-specific proposal describe different purchases.
Give each estimator the same starting information
Use the same vehicle model, preferred parking location and photos for each Palm Harbor quote request. Mention whether you already own a charger and supply its model information. If one estimator assumes a garage wall and another assumes a driveway pedestal, the prices do not describe the same project. Ask each to state the location and route it has priced.
Share typical daily miles, arrival time and next departure so each contractor is solving the same charging need. Do not let one quote assume the fastest possible charging while another prices the household’s actual overnight need.
Mark missing items instead of assuming they are included
Create a short comparison covering equipment supply, mounting, wiring, any electrical changes, restoration and commissioning. Mark each item included, excluded or not specified. Ask how changes discovered during the site assessment are approved. A useful estimate makes the next decision clear without asking you to become the electrical designer.
Add permit fees, inspection scheduling, utility coordination, travel, trenching, surge protection and wall or driveway repair to the comparison. If panel or service work is proposed, separate it and ask for the documented reason. “Standard installation” should be translated into the exact distance, surface and equipment assumed.
Check who owns the permitting handoff
For a Palm Harbor property, ask the contractor to confirm the responsible authority for the exact address and explain who submits, schedules and closes each step. A mailing address does not by itself establish whether a city or county office handles the record. Avoid treating an advertised installation window as a promise about an outside office’s review time. Keep the permit and inspection references with the accepted proposal.
If an association, landlord or shared drive is involved, identify those approvals separately. Private permission does not replace a permit, and a permit does not grant access across property the homeowner does not control.
Treat utility programs as a separate comparison line
Duke Energy Florida announced Charger Prep and Off-Peak Charging credit programs in 2025. [1] The announcement says the infrastructure credit does not apply to charger hardware, software or permit fees. Confirm the actual utility account, current eligibility, required equipment, documentation and timing directly before using a credit in the decision.
Ask each contractor to show the installed price before a utility credit. That keeps the quotes comparable if program rules change or the property is not eligible. Record a verified incentive as a separate household benefit rather than an unsupported contractor discount.
Compare support after installation
Ask who demonstrates charging, where to find the product instructions and whom to contact for an installation concern. Separate equipment warranty terms from the contractor’s written workmanship terms. If you are supplying the charger, ask how a faulty unit would be handled before installation day.
