THE SHORT ANSWER
OUC’s published battery rebate conditions require forfeiting eligibility for its TruNet Full Retail Rate on exported energy. Verify your account’s current eligibility and compare the written alternatives before treating a rebate as a simple discount. [1]
Find out which account benefit is at stake
Ask OUC to confirm the export treatment currently applicable to your account and the treatment after accepting the rebate. Save the answer with the proposed battery scope. The provider’s battery page also specifies equipment and future utility-control compatibility conditions; have the installer identify how the proposed system meets them. [1]
Account history matters. OUC’s rooftop-solar guidance announces changes beginning November 1, 2026 and describes different treatment for qualifying earlier accounts and newer interconnections. [2] A neighbor’s eligibility is not proof of yours. Do not decide using a sales presentation that simply subtracts a headline incentive from the equipment price.
Compare two versions of the same battery project
Request a case without the rebate and a case accepting it, using the same battery, installation scope, usage assumptions and operating strategy. Put the up-front difference next to the export-treatment difference. Include any additional equipment or control requirements that distinguish the cases.
For a deliberately simplified example, assume 2,000 kWh of annual exports and a hypothetical credit difference of $0.04 per kWh. The annual difference would be $80. These are invented values, not OUC rates or an estimate for your home. Replace both inputs with verified assumptions, and do not extrapolate an unchanged difference indefinitely when tariff periods differ.
Separate energy shifting from outage protection
Ask the designer how much surplus energy can actually be stored and later used under the proposed settings. Reserve capacity for outages may change the energy available for daily cycling. A proposal should state those settings rather than count the same stored energy twice.
Write down the circuits the system is intended to support, the limits on simultaneous loads and what happens when stored energy runs low. Have the installer explain the compatible equipment and operating configuration. A financial comparison does not by itself establish that the installation provides the household’s desired backup function.
Keep the agreement and approval steps together
Before committing, gather the rebate conditions, utility account confirmation, proposed equipment list, installed price and relevant application responsibilities. Ask who verifies eligibility, who submits the rebate documents and what happens if an application is not accepted. Do not assume a quoted incentive has already been awarded.
