THE SHORT ANSWER
Lakeland Electric warns that independent solar estimates can differ from its calculator and are not guaranteed. Preserve the inputs from each tool before comparing outputs. [1]
Name the output
Determine whether the result is annual solar production, purchased energy, exported energy or an estimated bill. Tools can show similar dollar or kWh figures while modeling different boundaries. Copy the label and units with the result.
Save the production assumptions
PVWatts exposes system size, array type, losses, tilt, azimuth and weather-resource inputs. [2] Keep these fields with the annual kWh estimate. Do not use a default orientation when a surveyed roof plane points elsewhere.
Save the billing assumptions
For the Lakeland calculation, record rate-plan version, imported and exported energy treatment, demand assumptions and any current charges. Ask the utility when an input is unclear rather than forcing another calculator’s definition into the field.
Explain differences instead of averaging
If results disagree, compare dates, weather data, system losses, roof geometry, consumption and tariff treatment. Averaging two unlike numbers creates a third unsupported number. Use the tools as scenarios and identify which evidence still requires a site or account review.
Before your next conversation
- Label every output and unit.
- Save PVWatts system inputs.
- Save Lakeland billing inputs.
- Reconcile differences rather than averaging.
