Fort Myers area solar on LCEC: read the year-end reserve before adding panels

Compare household usage and unused energy reserves before assuming that a larger solar array creates a proportionally larger financial benefit.

THE SHORT ANSWER

For an LCEC account, distinguish energy reserved for later use from the annual settlement of unused reserves. The published program says remaining reserves after December billing are payable in January at the prior year’s calculated avoided wholesale rate. [1]

Verify the provider on this property

Use the utility name, account and meter shown on the home’s bill. Fort Myers area project planning should not substitute an assumed utility for the actual provider. This guide addresses LCEC’s published program; if the account is with FPL or another utility, obtain that provider’s terms instead.

Gather a full year of electricity and solar records when available. Record household changes, including a new EV, added occupants or equipment that no longer operates. If the system has a monitoring problem, resolve the data uncertainty before using the apparent surplus as the sole basis for another purchase.

Separate three different energy quantities

Ask the proposal reviewer to distinguish solar used in the home, energy sent to the grid and the reserve still unused at the annual settlement point. LCEC describes excess generation being banked to offset later usage, followed by a different treatment for the remaining year-end balance. [1]

A 1,000 kWh reserve does not mean a $1,000 payment. A calculation of settlement value needs an applicable dollar-per-kWh rate as well as the eligible quantity. Keep that rate dated and sourced. A forecast that simply values every exported kWh at an assumed retail price can obscure the question you are trying to answer.

Compare an expansion against the home you expect

Ask for two cases: the current system with the documented household, and the proposed addition with the same household. Add a third case only if there is a specific planned usage change. Request the additional installed price, expected production, remaining purchases and possible unused reserve for each.

For an illustrative sensitivity check, 800 kWh valued at an invented $0.05 per kWh equals $40; the same quantity at an invented $0.15 equals $120. Neither rate is an LCEC quote. The $80 difference shows why the selected rate matters; it does not establish the return from any real expansion.

Ask what is included beyond the extra panels

An expansion proposal should identify compatibility review, mounting and electrical work, relevant application changes, monitoring and the handoff record. Ask the designer how the changed system will be represented in the utility documentation and which costs remain unresolved until a site review.

Origin Direct can review a solar proposal with the existing equipment information and household assumptions visible. Compare the full installed price and available payment terms against the incremental benefit being modeled. A larger system can only be evaluated fairly when the additional work and the treatment of additional energy are both explained.

Before your next conversation

  • Identify the utility from the actual account.
  • Gather annual usage, production and reserve information.
  • Verify the rate used for any year-end settlement estimate.
  • Compare current-system and expansion cases on the same assumptions.
